Mount Challenger

An 800ft position near Mount Kent and about 12 miles west of Stanley, first occupied by a detachment from D Squadron 22 Special Air Service on the night of 27 May, and then again in strength three days later by L Company 42 Commando and a party of sappers. From there they established an observation post on Mount Wall.

Mount Harriet

This 800ft position 6 miles from Stanley became a focus of attention when on 9 June Major General Moore issued operational orders for 3 Commando Brigade to attack towards Stanley in three phases, to include an assault on Mount Harriet during Phase One. The following day, Thompson tasked 42 Commando with this objective, with elements of the Welsh Guards in reserve, and with the possibility of supporting 45 Commando should that unit succeed at Two Sisters and proceed against Mount Tumbledown.

Preparations for the assault on Mount Harriet began when 42 Commando, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Nick Vaux, arrived on Mount Kent on 31 May and began to patrol the surrounding eminences: Mount Challenger, Mount Wall, Goat Ridge and, finally, Mount Harriet. With winter now reaching its height, temperatures continued to fall, but 42 Commando enjoyed the advantage of two weeks with which to conduct reconnaissance, identify Argentine positions and minefields, and formulate plans for the best route of attack. Patrolling produced extremely valuable intelligence over successive nights, some featuring brief clashes with hostile patrols, enabling Vaux to establish an excellent understanding of Argentine positions on and around Harriet, held by B Company, 4th Infantry Regiment, sections from the 1st Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Brigade Defence Platoon and a platoon from Combat Team Solari.
